Returning Player Guide
If your character looks unfamiliar, that is normal. Neverwinter has changed leveling, campaigns, enchantments, mounts, companions, stats and endgame progression many times. Relearn the current systems before rebuilding everything.
Do Not Delete or Convert Everything Immediately
Old characters may contain legacy equipment, currencies, appearance items, exchange items or account resources. Inspect first. Make changes only after you know what the current system expects.
Major Changes You May Notice
Maximum Level 20
The modern leveling system ends at level 20 and uses Adventures instead of the old long level progression.
Campaign Restructuring
Some old campaigns were retired or converted into Adventures while many others remain active Legacy Campaigns.
Enchantments Changed
The old enchantment/runestone-era setup is no longer the current system.
Combat Enchantments
As of Monoliths of Madness, characters can equip one Strike and one Guard combat enchantment.
Mounts Matter More
Mount Bolster, powers, insignias and collars contribute to character progression.
Companions Changed
Summoned companions, player bonuses, companion equipment and bolster all contribute differently than older systems.
Rebuild in This Order
Old Campaigns May Look Different
Several campaigns that existed in older versions of Neverwinter were converted into Adventures or retired during later system updates.
Converted to Adventures
Examples include Undermountain, Elemental Evil, Maze Engine, Acquisitions Incorporated and Tyranny of Dragons.
Still Active Campaigns
Dread Ring, Icewind Dale, Storm King's Thunder, Chult, Ravenloft, Avernus and many newer campaigns remain available.
Current Story
The newest permanent campaign is Biting Cold, while Monoliths of Madness is the current 2026 interim event update.
Your Old Build Guide Is Probably Not Current
If a guide mentions old level caps, runestones, old enchantment ranks or gear from several modules ago, use it for historical reference only.
What Still Matters
Campaign Completion
Old campaign progress and Boon Points can still save significant time.
Collections
Old characters may own mounts, companions, artifacts and appearances that remain useful.
Guild Membership
Stronghold boons and an active alliance can immediately help a returning character.
Account Unlocks
Some upgraded systems can provide account-wide reclaim options.
Experience
Dungeon mechanics and class instincts often return much faster than gear progression.
Your Character
You do not have to start over simply because the interface changed.
Current 2026 Changes to Know
Module 33: Biting Cold introduced Reghed Edge and the Jotunskar dungeon. Module 33.5: Monoliths of Madness launched September 1, 2026 and added the current dual combat-enchantment setup with separate Strike and Guard slots.
