Module 23
Dragonslayer
🐉 Module Overview
Dragonslayer released June 14, 2022 as Neverwinter's 23rd module. It rebuilt dragon hunting around adjustable encounters, refreshed the Well of Dragons and modernized the long-running Rise of Tiamat trial.
The module's core loop is deliberately repeatable: choose a dragon tier, add optional modifiers, defeat one of five chromatic dragon types and exchange the resulting materials for hunt rewards.

📜 Dragonslayer Campaign & Unlocks
Follow the Campaign Journal into the renewed Well of Dragons. The introductory quests teach hunt preparation, unlock higher hunt tiers over time and connect the permanent progression track to the dragon-slayer store.
| Step | Goal | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Report for Duty | Begin the Journal introduction and travel to the Well of Dragons. | Establishes the new campaign version of the zone. |
| 2. Learn the Hunt | Complete the tutorial route and prepare the first dragon encounter. | Introduces tier selection and hunt resources. |
| 3. Advance the Track | Complete eligible hunts and campaign tasks within the current weekly limit. | Unlocks milestones, store access and higher hunt options. |
| 4. Improve the Challenge | Use modifiers only when the group can handle the added conditions. | Better reward chances are useful only when the hunt still completes reliably. |
| 5. Face Ancient Dragons | Build a five-player group and apply color-specific mechanics. | Ancient hunts are the module's organized farming core. |
| 6. Challenge Tiamat | Queue for the appropriate trial difficulty. | Connects the renewed dragon campaign to its signature trial. |
🗺️ The Reworked Well of Dragons
Dragonslayer consolidated and refreshed the Well of Dragons so the zone could serve as the campaign hub for hunt contacts, vendors, story steps and the renewed Tiamat conflict.
Campaign Hub
Use the Journal and zone contacts together; a locked hunt tier usually points to campaign progress, not a missing queue.
Travel Points
Unlock the available travel routes before building a repeatable farm loop.
Shared Identity
Older Rise of Tiamat and Tyranny of Dragons history remains relevant, but the Dragonslayer version reorganized how players reach the content.
Live Map First
Quest markers and NPC placement can move after updates. Use current routes rather than a launch screenshot.
🐲 Dragon Hunt System
Dragon Hunts scale by group size and danger. The dragon's color changes its damage themes and battlefield hazards, while optional modifiers can make the encounter harder in exchange for improved chances at desirable rewards.
| Hunt Tier | Group Size | Best Use | Preparation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Young Dragon | Solo | Learning the loop and color cues without group scheduling. | Bring a stable solo loadout and recovery options. |
| Adult Dragon | Three players | Small-group progression and efficient practice. | Cover damage, survival and mechanic response. |
| Ancient Dragon | Five players | Organized farming and the strongest hunt challenge. | Agree on modifiers, roles and target strategy before entry. |
Red Dragon
Expect fire-themed pressure and dangerous ground effects; preserve safe space instead of stacking hazards.
Green Dragon
Poison and lingering areas punish poor movement and weak cleansing or recovery plans.
White Dragon
Cold control and freezing pressure can disrupt rotations; react to immobilizing mechanics quickly.
Black Dragon
Acid-themed hazards reward clean positioning and awareness of persistent danger.
Blue Dragon
Lightning pressure and target spacing can punish players who ignore visual cues.
Modifiers
Apply only the conditions the group understands. More modifiers are not efficient if failure or slow clears erase the reward advantage.
⚔️ Rise of Tiamat Rework
Module 23 changed Rise of Tiamat from its older 20-player format to a ten-player trial and added a Master version. The encounter still revolves around coordinated defense, dragon-head phases and correct use of the arena's protective tools.
| Tier | Purpose | Group Focus | Historical Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Accessible trial progression and learning the renewed flow. | Follow phase calls, protect objectives and move to the correct head. | Entered the modern ten-player queue structure. |
| Master | Organized endgame challenge with stricter execution. | Plan tanking, healing, damage windows and mechanic assignments. | Launched as the higher-difficulty version of the rework. |
Protect the Clerics
The defense stage succeeds through add control and objective protection, not by chasing isolated damage.
Use the Right Protection
Match the arena's color mechanics and timing; a missed protection window can overwhelm the group.
Coordinate Heads
Move as a team and preserve burst for the called target instead of splitting damage across the arena.
🎯 Queue & Demogorgon Changes
Dragonslayer also reorganized queue categories, reward chests and reroll behavior. Demogorgon received encounter and difficulty revisions during the same module era.
| Launch Queue Type | Published Gate | Archive Note |
|---|---|---|
| Skirmish | 20,000 Item Level | Historical baseline; use the live queue. |
| Dungeon | 25,000 Item Level | Historical baseline; individual dungeons may differ now. |
| Trial | 30,000 Item Level | Historical baseline for standard trials. |
| Advanced Dungeon | 35,000+ Item Level | The exact activity gate varied. |
| Tower of the Mad Mage | 50,000 Item Level | Published launch-era placement. |
| Master Zariel | 55,000 Item Level | Published launch-era placement. |
| Master Crown of Keldegonn | 65,000 Item Level | Published launch-era placement. |
🛡️ Hunt Rewards & Target Farming
Hunt progression, dragon materials, modifiers and store unlocks work together. Start with the item you want, then trace backward to its current hunt tier, modifier requirement and purchase cost.
| Decision | Question to Answer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Select the Item | Does the current tooltip or collection show a hunt, store or trial source? | Prevents farming the wrong activity. |
| Check the Tier | Young, Adult or Ancient? | The same dragon family does not guarantee the same reward pool. |
| Check Modifiers | Is a specific modifier or difficulty condition required? | Avoids unnecessary challenge or an ineligible run. |
| Check Materials | What currencies and unlocks does the store require? | Lets the group calculate the real number of runs. |
| Compare the Effect | Is the item still useful for the role and build? | Old popularity does not guarantee modern value. |
Reliable Clears Win
A repeatable setup with a high completion rate usually beats a maximum-modifier strategy that fails.
Farm as a Group
Agree on tier, dragon color, modifiers and goal before entering so every player expects the same run.
🧭 Practical Hunt Preparation
Dragon Hunts are short enough to repeat but punishing enough to expose weak preparation. Build around the chosen modifiers and dragon color rather than using one unchanged setup for every encounter.
Tank
Control facing, avoid dragging hazards through the group and communicate when movement is unavoidable.
Healer
Plan burst recovery and cleanse or mitigation tools around the color and selected modifiers.
Damage
Prioritize adds and encounter mechanics when required; uninterrupted boss damage is not always the fastest path.
Consumables
Use relevant event food, potions and overloads only after confirming current effects and availability.
Communication
State the dragon, tier and modifiers before queueing. A ten-second check prevents many abandoned runs.
Recovery Plan
Know whether the group can revive safely and when a reset is faster than spending more resources.
📚 What Remains Relevant
The permanent value of Dragonslayer is its repeatable hunt structure, renewed Well of Dragons and modern Tiamat format. Launch Item Levels and reward rankings are historical; encounter recognition and source routing remain useful.
Still Useful
Hunt tier logic, dragon-color awareness, modifier planning and coordinated Tiamat phases.
Verify Live
Queue gates, store costs, reward pools, weekly limits and the value of individual gear pieces.
Do Not Confuse
Older Tyranny of Dragons guides may describe the pre-rework Well of Dragons or 20-player Tiamat.
