Dungeon & Trial Guides
Mechanics, positioning, boss phases and practical group strategy for Neverwinter dungeons, skirmishes and trials — from long-running queues to the newest endgame encounters.
Playable Does Not Mean Outdated
Neverwinter has content from many different modules still in active circulation. Castle Never, Tomb of the Nine Gods, Infernal Citadel, Lair of the Mad Mage and other established queues belong beside newer encounters because players still need their mechanics today.
PUV Guide Policy: Community-submitted mechanics are the foundation for these guides, but mechanics, requirements and rewards are checked against current live Neverwinter information before being treated as final. Preview Server information is not published as live guidance.

Merchant Prince's FollyEstablished Dungeons
Castle NeverMaze Engine era • Orcus
Foyer & Tears
- Fight through the entrance and bridge section.
- The Foyer contains dimensional tears that must be cleared before the group can continue.
- Interacting with a tear pulls a player inside to defeat the enemies within.
- Control heavy enemy pressure near the later tears rather than allowing dangerous mobs to turn through the group.
Hall of Mirrors & Death Sphere
- Large groups of undead fill the route; weaker groups should control pulls instead of dragging the entire hall at once.
- Bonded or tethered players are pulled toward one another and should separate before the collision becomes dangerous.
- During the lighter Death Sphere event, stop enemies from charging the sphere.
Green Mist Hall
- Follow the safe route through the poison maze.
- Moving poison/death spheres can be lethal; fight from safe pockets rather than standing in their path.
Orcus
- Tank Orcus facing away from the party.
- Sphere of Annihilation: prevent undead enemies from charging the sphere.
- Rifts can increase Orcus' resistance; close them instead of accepting reduced damage.
- Tethered players separate.
- Avoid the moving death/poison spheres.
- Expect a heavy fixed-health-loss special in addition to normal boss attacks.
Grey Wolf DenRegdar Thunderfist • Packmaster Zayev • Ethraniev Marrowslake
Regdar Thunderfist
- Adds continually re-enter the encounter.
- Prioritize dangerous ranged enemies so they do not overwhelm the healer while the boss is being burned.
Packmaster Zayev
- This is an add-heavy fight; use AoE and control to prevent packs from stacking on the group.
Ethraniev Marrowslake
- Alternates between human and werewolf phases.
- Werewolf form creates periods of immunity.
- Stormcaller adds appear during the fight.
- A special red wolf periodically spawns; kill it very close to Marrowslake to trigger the proper transition and remove immunity.
- Control black wolves and large add waves before they accumulate.
Tomb of the Nine GodsChult • Puzzles • Orcus • Withers • Ras Nsi
Puzzles
- Use the stone-mask indicators to identify the intended route.
- Match the Trickster God symbols correctly instead of taking the failure penalty.
- Handle the transformation-potion puzzle by matching the correct player/effect to the correct platform.
- Complete the artifact-sequence puzzle rather than brute-forcing the consequence.
Orcus
- Three players select encounter curses with different benefits.
- One curse provides very large temporary HP, one improves damage against zombie adds, and one improves damage against Orcus.
- Poison/death spheres periodically chase players; the temporary-HP role is useful for intercepting dangerous spheres.
Withers
- The arena cycles through poison, water, lightning and fire hazards.
- Remove the matching power source when necessary instead of allowing multiple elemental hazards to stack.
Ras Nsi
- Tank Ras Nsi facing away from the group.
- Heavy overhead attacks and repeated AoEs punish poor positioning.
- A large ghost can create a platform-wide push; move to the safe side before it resolves.
- Soul adds charge the Soulmonger. Kill them quickly; a full Soulmonger creates a catastrophic group failure.
Modern Dungeons
Lair of the Mad MageUndermountain • Three-boss dungeon
Boss 1
- Players take assigned corners and kill their mimic before it reaches the center.
- Failed mimics create dangerous additional enemies.
- Cocooned players are reduced to critically low health and must be healed immediately.
- Everyone else should avoid standing directly on the cocoon.
Boss 2
- When the boss disappears, players are pulled toward the center; reaching the center is lethal.
- Break falling boulders before they reach the middle.
- Failed boulders strengthen the later damage phase.
- Stack and coordinate mitigation when the stored damage is released.
Boss 3
- Activate and clear scorpions in a controlled order.
- For the + / − mechanic, matching signs repel and opposite signs attract.
- Avoid collisions when opposite signs pull players together.
- Destroy the four charging pillars quickly to reduce the incoming group-damage phase.
The Infernal CitadelInfernal Descent
Boss 1
- The group chooses one of several demon-granted powers before the encounter.
- Keep non-tanks out of the frontal cleave.
- Tank should save stamina for the heaviest strike in the attack chain.
- The pre-fight portal/spore choice changes what appears during the boss.
Boss 2
- Tank movement controls where fire pools are placed.
- Keep the boss facing the tank while the group rotates around the arena in a controlled pattern.
- Health thresholds trigger imp-grab and explosion phases; free grabbed players and use pillars correctly.
Boss 3
- Bombardment permanently destroys arena tiles.
- Place targeted AoEs on as few tiles as possible.
- Aim charges toward safe terrain.
- Avoid burning rows/columns and frontal/side lasers.
- The tank chain mechanic requires strong mitigation and healing.
- Adds can knock players into destroyed sections.
The Demonweb PitsModule 26 • Narbondellyn
Marilith
- Use predictable tank positioning and control add pressure instead of overlapping dangerous mechanics.
Gromph
- Movement, arena awareness and assigned mechanics become much less forgiving in Advanced and Master.
Lolth
- Complete positioning/assignment mechanics before returning to full damage; failed mechanics are heavily punished in higher difficulties.
The Imperial CitadelAdventures in Wildspace • Module 28
Monstrous Menagerie
- Control targets rather than spreading damage across multiple dangerous creatures at once.
Zodar
- Respect movement and arena mechanics; higher difficulties punish missed positioning.
Emperor Xeleth
- Watch directional telegraphs, avoid cone attacks, and coordinate artifact/support calls rather than using them randomly.
Lair of the Mad DragonModern reworked dungeon • Mountain of Flame
Modern version
- This is the reworked dungeon, not the original leveling-era encounter.
- Tank the boss in a predictable direction and dodge/mitigate the major frontal tankbuster.
- Prioritize dangerous support/healer-type adds.
- The modern version emphasizes add priority, positioning and mechanic execution.
The Dread SanctumModule 30 • Reworked Dread Vault
Modern version
- The old Dread Vault was fully reworked into The Dread Sanctum.
- Treat its bosses as modern encounters rather than relying on memories of the original dungeon.
- Normal, Advanced and Master versions increasingly punish missed mechanics.
JotunskarModule 33: Biting Cold • Current endgame dungeon
Hunang & the Imprisoned Beasts
- Manage Frostbite while handling the boss and imprisoned creatures.
- Target priority matters; do not scatter the group while managing the basilisk/tank mechanics.
Oddgeir
- The sacrifice mechanic is the centerpiece of the encounter.
- Follow the assigned mechanic rather than trying to brute-force the boss.
- Tank positioning and survival are especially important during the heavier attacks.
Herleifr the Everlasting
- Totem management is central to the fight.
- Keep the encounter organized as mechanics overlap.
- Expect an interlude and higher mechanical pressure before the final burn.
Trials
Rise of Tiamat / Master TiamatDragonslayer-era trial rework
Opening
- Clear the opening enemies and establish tank control.
- Collect the assigned dragon-gem power and confirm assignments before the later phases.
Cleric Phase
- Split into assigned teams and protect the clerics.
- Handle dragon-gem mechanics according to color.
- Do not panic-dodge through teammates while carrying a dangerous color effect.
Dragon Heads
- Keep the two parties reasonably synchronized.
- Follow the tank/head order.
- Active head colors determine which protections may be required.
- Approach carefully to avoid directional attacks and pushes.
Final Phase
- Confirm which players still have useful gem coverage.
- Missing a required color can end the attempt.
- Save coordinated burn tools for the proper window.
Zariel's ChallengeAvernus • Master mechanics
Core mechanic set
- White Noise: stack and prepare group mitigation.
- Falling Blades: move targeted circles away and do not overlap them.
- Celestial Blades: avoid the portal-generated red patterns.
- Tether: take connected players away from the group.
- Hypothermia: stack/huddle.
- Donut: use the safe center or move completely outside the ring.
- Holy Circle: move out of the solid danger circle.
- Cleave: leave the frontal line.
- Daunting Lights: read the directional pattern and stand in the safe space.
- Charge: when Zariel prepares at the platform edge, leave her charge lane.
- Wing Push: move close enough to avoid being thrown from the platform.
Crown of KeldegonnDragonbone Vale • Dracolich trial
Tank stacks
- Claw Swipe is a frontal cone and applies tank pressure/debuffs.
- Rendering Bleed accumulates; tanks should swap when stacks become dangerous.
Necrotic Miasma
- Non-tanks receive a placement marker that becomes a purple miasma pool.
- Do not overlap new or existing pools; overlapping miasma becomes empowered.
Bomb / Orb
- Marked player moves away from the group and avoids catching multiple players in the impact.
Tail, Breath & Bite
- Tail Lash punishes players behind the Dracolich.
- Lightning Breath is a frontal cone.
- Bite is a heavy tank mechanic and another useful swap point.
Empowered Draconic Aura
- Support enemies appear later and strengthen the Dracolich.
- Kill supports quickly and do not cover them with miasma pools.
- Tank swapping continues while stacks accumulate.

Defense of the MoondancerSpelljammer • Module 27
Trial flow
- Air Bleeders drain the ship's available air, creating time pressure.
- Six Loyal Lieutenants occupy different areas of the ship.
- Clear mechanics efficiently while preventing the environment from becoming the real enemy.
- Captain Zoor'lar is the final confrontation.
Shackles of DivinityRed Harvest • Module 31
Trial flow
- Fight Valkariel and the Zulkir encounters while handling Arcane Cracking mechanics.
- Learn the magical-school rune/platform puzzle.
- Return to the central platform safely after Zulkir phases.
- Mythallar phases require correct positioning and group coordination.
- Master mode strongly punishes missed mechanics.
Soul HarvestRed Harvest II: The Soul Collector • Module 32
Early phases
- Manage assigned buffs instead of depositing or carrying them randomly.
- Use the arena/map route and role assignments.
Biome mechanics
- Fae, Fire and Ice areas use different stun/control mechanics.
- Learn the visual language of each biome instead of treating them as interchangeable.
Ghost / color assignments
- Submitted PUV material includes red, green, blue and white ghost assignments.
- Follow the designated route/deposit order and maintain healer/tank/DPS positioning.
Later mechanics
- Expect stacking circles, danger pools, tethers, orb/bomb handling and movement/stop indicators.

Skirmishes & Rotating Challenges
Merchant Prince's FollyChult / Port Nyanzaru skirmish
Stage 1
- Wake and arm the prince's guards while securing the compound.
Stage 2
- Build defenses around the outer courtyard and protect the Royal Engineer.
Stage 3
- Escort the Royal Engineer to the damaged gate and keep enemies off him while the breach is repaired.
Why it still matters
- This skirmish also overlaps older progression paths such as the Chain of Scales upgrade route.
Group Fundamentals
TankControl boss facing, establish predictable positioning, save stamina/mitigation for tankbusters and communicate swaps.
HealerWatch mechanic targets, not only health bars. Save major heals and mitigation for predictable damage windows.
DPSMechanics come before the scoreboard. Kill priority adds, respect placement mechanics and save burn tools for the correct windows.
